Debunking Four Common Sanitation Myths that Could Be Eating Into Your Profits

From old wives’ tales to folklore, all sorts of things fall victim to misconceptions, and sanitation is no exception. Home hygiene and office disinfection are saddled with various untruths that can compromise well-being. Four of the most common sanitation myths include the following:

Sanitation is a Waste of Time

It can be hard to clean a home or an office knowing it’ll only get messy again. But regularly sanitizing is about more than making things look aesthetically appealing; it’s also about fostering health and happiness.

Scrubbing, shampooing, and wiping down surfaces free homes and offices of germs, viruses, bacteria, and other things you don’t want lurking around (like fecal matter from outside). This allows children to watch TV in the den without being exposed to e-coli and your employees to enter the office without getting the flu as an unwanted seasonal bonus.

Sanitation is Just About Toilet Seats

It’s a widespread belief that the bathroom is the germiest room in the home, but most experts agree that it’s the kitchen (or perhaps the breakroom, in the case of office buildings). This is because the kitchen is considered a “high-touch” area; from refrigerator handles to sink faucets to cabinet knobs and countertops, there are all sorts of places for germs to land.

People also perceive the kitchen as clean (certainly cleaner than the bathroom) and thus are more likely to touch things liberally (and without washing their hands) when they might use more restraint in a multi-person restroom.

Carpets Don’t Need Shampooing

The question isn’t whether or not your carpets need shampooing; the question is how often. The answer is, of course, variable, as infrequently used areas can go for extended periods without a thorough cleaning, while high-traffic areas might require shampooing every two or three months. Homes with pets and children and offices with customers coming and going or under renovation may need to be shampooed as regularly as once a week.

Frequent Carpet Cleaning and Vacuuming Ruins Your Carpets

While it’s a common perception that too much vacuuming can, quite literally, suck the quality out of your flooring, it does the opposite. Cleaning your carpets regularly prevents dirt from building up on the carpet, which can ruin the fibers, make the carpet look dingy, and make the fibers more easily snagged by wayward cat claws or a stiletto.

Cleaning might not be anyone’s favorite pastime, but it’s necessary! Regularly sanitizing keeps germs and dirt at bay and allows people to live their healthiest lives in the office or the family room.
