Suction Versus Airflow: Understanding the True Power of a Vacuum

In vacuum terminology, suction and airflow are often used interchangeably. Although related, these terms have significant differences, allowing them to stand apart while working together. Read on to understand what each term means and how they complement each other to create an efficient cleaning machine.
What is Suction?
Suction is the pulling power (or sucking power) of the vacuum’s motor. Its main role is to loosen dirt and debris, pulling them out of carpet fibers and other surfaces into the machine. Suction is measured by air watts (AW), pascals (Pa), or inches of water lift (inH2O). It is most important when deep-cleaning carpets, removing pet hair (which tends to settle in carpet fibers and furniture), and cleaning dirt and debris embedded in flooring.
What is Airflow?
Airflow is defined by the volume of air moving through the vacuum, measured in cubic feet per minute (CFM). Its main function is to carry dirt into the vacuum’s bag or bin. Airflow is especially important when vacuuming hard floors or cleaning up heavy debris.
How Do They Work Together?
Airflow and suction are both essential for effective vacuuming. The vacuum’s suction begins the process, pulling dirt and debris from floors or upholstery, while airflow moves it along until it’s dumped inside the vacuum.
A balance between the two concepts is essential; too much suction without proper airflow clogs the vacuum, preventing debris from passing through the hose. Conversely, too much airflow combined with weak suction renders vacuuming ineffective, as debris, especially if heavy, embedded, or shed by a pet, won’t be picked up properly.
Under certain conditions, the airflow-suction balance can be adjusted for more effective cleaning, at least to some extent. Specialty accessories boost airflow while reducing suction, which can be helpful when using a crevice tool to clean window tracks or other areas where debris is loose but plentiful and easy to pick up.
Ultimately, the best vacuums leverage physics to provide strong suction and proper airflow for effective cleaning.
