How HEPA Vacuums Support Healthier Learning Environments

HEPA filters

Schools might be places where children learn, grow, and find their place in the world, but they’re also places where illness runs rampant. From strep throat to COVID to seasonal colds, hallways can sometimes feel like petri dishes, and getting the flu is about as common as getting an A in gym class.

While making schools and other learning environments completely sterile and germ-free is all but impossible, there are ways to mitigate the risk. One of the simplest options is to use a vacuum with a HEPA filter. These machines are designed to remove a variety of viruses and bacteria, even when they’re microscopic.

What are HEPA filters?

High-Efficiency Particulate Air (HEPA) filters are designed to capture particles that are otherwise difficult to trap. According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), HEPA filters can remove up to 99.7% of airborne particulates measuring 0.3 microns. These particles are roughly 300 times smaller than a grain of sand and 200-300 times thinner than a strand of human hair. True HEPA filters must meet strict standards to ensure their efficiency.

They work through a mechanism in which particles adhere to fibers as air passes through. Large particles are captured by impact, while tiny particles are captured by diffusion.

What are HEPA filters used for?

HEPA filters are used to remove particles from a variety of environments, including homes, offices, schools, hospitals, aircraft, and more.

They’re used in ventilation systems, air purifiers, and vacuums, and are designed to capture:

  • Dust
  • Pollen
  • Pet fur
  • Mold
  • Particles from tobacco smoke
  • Certain bacteria and viruses
  • Fine debris
  • Airborne allergens

The Benefits of HEPA Vacuums in Learning Environments

HEPA vacuums are valuable in any environment because improving air quality is hard to get wrong. However, there are several ways HEPA vacuums are uniquely beneficial to schools, daycares, after-school programs, and learning centers. HEPA vacuums can do the following:

  • More thoroughly clean classrooms and common areas by trapping particles that traditional vacuums miss
  • Reduce allergens in circulation, which is highly important, given that roughly  8% of children have asthma and up to 30% of people have seasonal allergies
  • Reduce exposure to a wide range of disease-causing pathogens, from E. coli to strep throat
  • Protect high-traffic areas from collecting dust and debris, promoting a more hygienic atmosphere
  • Create more comfort, which empowers focus by reducing distractions caused by dust, odors, coughing, or sneezing

Learning environments and germs often go hand in hand, but a HEPA vacuum can make childhood a healthier experience (while protecting teachers and staff, too). These vacuums promote physical health and mental well-being: A healthier environment is a happier one!

Mosquito offers innovative backpack vacuums, spotters, and extractors that are efficient, ergonomic, powerful, and lightweight. Our goal is to boost workplace productivity, ensure safety, and keep spaces clean while keeping costs of ownership low. Contact us to learn more.
